Welcome to the World Cup section of football memories.

The World Cup, the biggest sporting event on earth is finally here. It only arrives once every four years but memories of every World Cup last a lifetime and I’m sure 2010 will be no exception. Over the years there has been many great moments at the World Cup that will be remembered forever.

The first World Cup was in 1930 hosted in only one stadium in Estadio Centenario, Montevideo, Uruguay. Only thirteen teams were present at the finals and there was no qualification. The World Cup has grown since then and now has a total of 204 teams appearing in the 2010 World Cup Qualification.

The most successful team in the history of the World Cup is Brazil, who have won it 5 times. Italy, Germany, Argentina, England, France and Uruguay also have the unique honour of lifting the trophy and becoming champions of the World.

From 1930-1970 the Jules Remit trophy was used as the official trophy. Brazil had the honour of keeping the trophy after winning it three times. The trophy was stolen in 1983 and never recovered. The new trophy first used in 1974 is simply known as the FIFA World Cup is has the unusual design of two sportsmen holding up the whole World. Unlike the previous trophy, the FIFA World Cup will not be given to any ountry outright after winning it three times. Instead the country gets the trophy for four years and then has a replica to keep forever.
