Will Germany Fail at the World Cup? PDF Print E-mail

It is almost football tradition that Germany never ‘fail’ at the FIFA World Cup. They seemingly always make it to the latter stages, and often to the semi-finals, or indeed the final.

They’re a dogged and consistent team, that always have strong squads, with solid defences, and potent centre forwards.

They have won the competition on three occasions – in Switzerland in 1954, in their own country in 1974, and in Italy in 1990, and Joachim Low’s team will be looking to make that four trophies come South Africa 2010. Although captain Michael Ballack has recently publicly stated he does not believe his team have the resources to progress as far as the likes of England, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, and Italy, the Germany team will nonetheless turn up with a wealth of experience, plenty of grit, and deep reserves on determination. So, who does the nation’s hopes rely on this year? Well, top group stage goalscorer Miroslav Klose has proven he can light up the world stage, and he’ll be looking to bag himself plenty of goals come the summer, but full-back Phillipp Lahm, who has been bounded around as a possible target for top English clubs, will be wanting to attack the wings with his spectacular brand of creative wing back play. The skilful midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is always a threat, and together with the force that is Lukas Podolski, Germany have a proven ability to score plenty of goals. In order to progress to the knockout rounds, Germany will have to first qualify from the tricky group stage draw they’ve been handed in South Africa. They’ll face Australian, who together with their dedicated army of supporters, are always a hard team to beat.

With Tim Cahill in inspired form for Everton, the German’s may have problems keeping him quiet. Elsewhere, Germany will face Serbia, and also the physical prowess of Ghana.

There will certainly be plenty of World Cup betting this year so why not take a look at Gamebookers.com and find out your team's odds.
